Informations about Cyprus

Cypriot gastronomy

The Cypriot cuisine is very special. The dishes are Mediterranean in character. What gives their uniqueness is the fact that their food is mixed with Middle Eastern cuisine spices. The Cypriot dishes have a Mediterranean character, but their specialty is given by the spices of Middle Eastern cuisine. The most typical is the so-called “meze” - of which there are two types: meat meze and fish meze. In addition to seafood, it is definitely worth tasting the soft halloumi grilled cheese made from goat's and sheep's milk, mousaka (pasta stuffed with minced meat), brush (meatballs) and the so-called Cypriot sweets, karidaki (young green walnuts in cinnamon, clove syrup) and kitrolemon (candied citrus). There are many restaurants in Cyprus and most of them have excellent service. The prices are about twice the price of the Hungarian restaurants. According to internationally accepted unwritten rules it is recommended to give approximately 10% of the final amount as a tip.

Kebab is well known throughout the island. The pieces of meat skewered are slowly baked on charcoal and then placed in pita dough. A popular dish in the covered clay pot is the slow-cooked lamb, kleftico. The shape of the special pots made of glazed clay is reminiscent of a beehive. If they offer, it’s not appropriate to refuse, but be careful. If we eat too much in the evening, we can have unpleasant stomach upsets.

Drinks

Local wines have magic! While some Cypriot wines can be disappointing because they don’t hit the bar, there are excellent, very fine, juicy wines as well.

A wine called Commandria St. John is almost intertwined with Cyprus. Originally made in Kolossi, that full-bodied, sweet wine was made thanks to the Knights of St. John. Other wines on the island include keo hock, white lady, arsinoe and aphrodite. There is a much larger selection of red varieties. Otello and afames are the most popular. The products of the developing industrial winery are the local white and red kantara. There are also many other excellent local wines. One of the strongest of them is "zivania". A kind of soul warmer.
